Gianyar (Bali-Indonesia), 14 September 2014 – Today saw strive, victory and true sportsmanship as spectators and supporters cheered the moment the winner of full marathon man open category, for the third year consecutively, Kennedy Kiproo Lilan from Kenya with BIB 1666 triumphed through the finish line at the BII-Maybank Bali Marathon 2014. Lilan scored a time of 2 hours 18 minutes and 52 seconds. After running a total length of 42.195 kilometers through the scenic but significantly challenging Gianyar countryside, Lilan was thrilled to receive his cash prize of USD 17,500, presented by President Commissioner of BII and Chairman of Maybank Group Tan Sri Dato Megat Zaharuddin bin Megat Mohd. Nor.

Retaining the theme ‘Push Your Limit’ this year, BII-Maybank Bali Marathon 2014 is participated by a total of 4,464 runners from 49 countries, with the most number of participants coming from host country Indonesia. A specific category for disabled participants is introduced this year which saw 40 “wheelchair runners” competing the 5K run. It also saw one wheel chair runner from Belgium, Stany Appermont, which will run the full marathon distance.

Overall, this year’s event has seen a significant increase in the number of runners. It has also achieved international standard. The marathon is also an embodiment of BII Maybank’s CSR programs ‘promote healthy life’. That is one of the reasons PT Bank International Indonesia Tbk (BII) is highly committed to carry out a marathon event that represents Indonesia.

BII-Maybank Bali Marathon 2014 which has taken place at the Bali Marine & Safari Park, with the main route traversing most of the countryside of the Gianyar regency in Bali. The event commenced at 5 a.m. sharp, when the Full Marathon (42.195 km) runners took off first. The start line was then followed by runners in the Half Marathon category (21.0975 km), the 10K category, and the Children’s Sprint, which comprised two age-based sub-categories, namely 100m and 450m, for children up to 5 years old and up to 12 years of age respectively.

This year’s marathon followed on the artistic and cultural highlights as featured last year, where schoolchildren who received educational aid and grants from BII in its ‘BII Berbagi’ CSR presentation at the Gianyar Balai Kota town hall the day prior, continued their enthusiasm with their best colorful costumes and cheered on to fire up the spirits of the runners from 49 countries to reach the finish line. Also surprisingly, several local village communities along the route have even taken initiative in adorning their roads with stages and cheerful in anticipating the runners, who might want to take opportunistic shots or drink stops with these friendly locals.

BII-Maybank Bali Marathon has received internatoinal certifcation for its Gianyar route with International Measurement Certificate number INA2012/009, Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS), with International Measurement Administrator Dave Cundy, a Grade A IAAF-AIMS course measurer.  BII Maybank Bali Marathon is also supported by the Indonesian national athletic association or Pengurus Besar Persatuan Atletik Seluruh Indonesia (PB PASI) meaning that it has fulfilled the international technical requirements.

Moreover, BII-Maybank Bali Marathon has recently received confirmation from Boston Marathon that its full Gianyar marathon route of 42.195 km has been included in the official directory of Boston Marathon. Therefore, BII-Maybank Bali Marathon 2014 is now one of the qualified marathons since it is within the qualified window for Boston Marathon 2015.
